Postdoctoral Fellowship
Tae-Ho Kim will receive a D. Kim Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year. He received his Master’s in Science degree from Seoul National University and is expected to receive his PH.D from Seoul National University late this summer. The title of his dissertation thesis is: New Rice Tongil and the Green Revolution under Park Chung-Hee Regime, 1964-1980.
Mr. Kim is currently an Research Professor, Institute of Medical History and Culture, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. His teaching experience includes positions at Seoul National University, Soongsil University and Inha University. Mr. Kim’s research project for the coming year is the boom of vocational training in South Korea, from 1967 to 1986
Exchange Student Fellowship
Oriana Walker will receive a D. Kim Foundation Exchange Student Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year. Ms. Walker received a BA degree form Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She has also attended Pre-Med Post-Baccalaureate program at Harvard University and an Intensive Program in Russian Language at Middlebury College. Ms. Walker is currently a PH.D candidate at Harvard University in the Department of History of Science. Her fields of study include History of Modern Medicine, History of Medicine in East Asia and Medical Anthropology.
She is planning to spend the next academic year studying the history of medicine and related science at the history department of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. She aims to gain familiarity and fluency with classical and modern medical texts, and to work with Chinese historians of science and medicine and to better understand traditional medicine as it is practiced and theorized in China today.
Travel/Research Grants
Fa-Ti Fan will receive a Travel/Research grant in 2009. He received a Bachelor in Science degree from Chengkung University in Taiwan, Master’s and PH.D degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Asian and Asian American Studies at the State University of New York, Binghamton.
He will be traveling to Budapest, Hungary in July to participate in the 3rd International Congress of the History of Science and Technology where he will present a paper “Science, nationalism and internationalism in the early 20th century”.
Chihyung Jeon will receive a Travel/Research grant in 2009. He received a Bachelor in Science degree from Seoul National University and is currently a PH.D candidate in the Program in History, Anthropology and Science, Technology and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Mr. Jeon is currently on a research trip in Japan. He will be traveling from Japan to Virginia to participate in the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations Annual Meeting in Falls Church, Virginia. He will present a paper “Contested Skies: The role of Civil Aviation in International Relations”.
Michelle Thompson will receive a Travel/Research Grant in 2009. She received a BA and a MA degree from the University of Alabama, and a PH.D. from the University of Washington. Dr. Thompson is fluent in several foreign languages including Vietnamese, Mandarin, French, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese.
She will attend the 23rd International Congress of the History of Science and Technology in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Thompson will present her paper “Gia Turyen a rapprochement within the Healing Community in Vietnam”.
